3rd Grade Language Arts
In our third-grade class, students investigate ideas: how to have an interesting idea, how to explore ideas, and how to organize and communicate their own ideas in writing. The class uses multiple fiction and nonfiction texts to teach reading and analysis, grammar, vocabulary, and writing. All of the lessons are built from passages students examine in class, so students learn to approach a text from multiple angles, from grammar and vocabulary to writing and interpretation. Throughout the year, students work on several long-term writing assignments, culminating in one portfolio piece that they revise and polish at the end of each trimester.
What happens in class?
Each lesson includes a different combination of:
- warm-up activities tied to the day’s objectives
- practice with new vocabulary words and grammar topics
- guided writing activities with in-person teacher feedback
- reading and critical thinking assignments
Students should expect to spend about an hour on homework every week. Homework may include assigned reading, vocabulary and grammar exercises, multi-week writing projects, and sustained reading of books students select from our recommended reading list. While students are working on longer written assignments, most of the writing will happen in class, so students can receive instant feedback from their teachers. However, students will be expected to complete some writing at home. At the end of each trimester, students will polish one of their writing assignments to include in their portfolio.
Students will receive constant informal feedback from the teacher, both written and verbal. The goal of informal feedback in this course is to encourage students and make sure they are internalizing the concepts, rather than to provide assessment. Formal feedback will be provided for exams and in response to students’ three writing portfolio pieces.
Students will take three in-class exams, one at the end of each trimester. Exams will focus on the grammar, vocabulary, reading and analysis, and writing skills students are learning in class.
