5th Grade Language Arts

5th Grade Language Arts

Academic Year Language Arts

In our fifth-grade class, students strengthen their ability to craft every component of formal academic writing. During class, the teacher guides students through the entire academic writing process: brainstorming, questioning, researching, writing, revising, and rewriting. Students will be given frequent opportunities to practice each component of the five-paragraph essay, including research and quotation. Additionally, students review foundational grammar concepts in greater depth and learn new vocabulary words. The goal of these lessons is to improve students' writing mechanics for implementation in their formal academic writing.

What happens in class?

Each lesson includes a different combination of:

Homework

Students should expect to spend 60-90 minutes on homework each week. Throughout the year, students work on several multi-week writing projects. While most of the writing is done in class, students complete some of the writing and revising at home. It is crucial that students keep up with this homework and come prepared for class each week. Students also complete some reading in their grammar writing textbooks for homework. Additionally, while it will not be officially assigned, students should also plan to review their vocabulary words between classes using their vocabulary textbook. They will be assigned cumulative vocabulary quiz questions for homework through the course homepage. Students should answer these without looking at their textbooks.

Teacher Feedback

Since students will compete most of their writing in class, there will be many opportunities for the teacher to provide informal feedback face-to-face while students are working. The teacher will conference with students regularly during class, providing oral feedback and some informal written notes on their work. At the end of each multi-week project, students will submit their final draft and receive detailed, formal written feedback from their teacher.

Exams

Students will take an exam at the end of each quarter during class. Each exam will assess students on the grammar and vocabulary covered that quarter.

"AoPS Academy has provided a wonderful opportunity for my children to advance and hone their knowledge and skills in mathematics.  My children have attended for a few years now, and they love it. They always look forward to attending class. I truly admire the hard work and dedication of all of the staff towards making AoPS Academy a center of excellence for math and language arts.  Both of my sons, one in high school and one in middle school, are ahead of their schoolmates in their math classes.  Not only that, they have both developed a love for this subject aided by the exposure they have received at AoPS Academy. They enjoy the interactive method of teaching, and look forward to their classes. The courses offered at AoPS Academy keep them engaged and challenged. The focus on high achieving students, along with their selective admissions standards, helps to maintain high standards. I have many business associates and friends around the United States, and have told them about AoPS Academy. They are so envious that we have such a wonderful opportunity for such rigorous instruction with the Art of Problem Solving world class curriculum. I look forward to the day when there will be an AoPS Academy in every major city in the country."
